This feature allows you to easily access your desktop, run applications, and even edit files remotely just like you would do when physically present at your computer. It helps users to boost productivity and facilitate remote work.<\/p>\n

How to enable Remote Desktop Connection in Windows 11<\/h2>\n

There are eleven ways using which you can enable and open the Remote Desktop Connection in Windows 11\/10:<\/p>\n

    1] Through Windows Settings<\/h4>\n

    In Windows 11<\/strong><\/p>\n

    You can follow the instructions below to enable Remote Desktop on Windows 11 through Settings:<\/p>\n

    1. Launch Windows Settings<\/strong> (Win<\/strong> + I<\/strong>) and click on System<\/strong> on the left.<\/li>\n
    2. Next, click on Remote Desktop<\/strong> on the right.<\/li>\n
    3. On the next screen, move the toggle switch to the right to enable Remote Desktop<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    4. Press the Confirm<\/strong> button to save the changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      This is how you can use Windows 11 Settings to enable Remote Desktop.<\/p>\n

      In Windows 10<\/strong><\/p>\n

      This procedure is for people who use Windows 10.\u00a0<\/strong>Go to the Start Menu and tap the cogwheel to launch Settings. Alternatively you could press ‘Windows + I’ keys to open Windows Settings. Next, go to \u2018System\u2019 from \u2018Settings\u2019 and find the \u2018Remote Desktop<\/strong>\u2019 option at the left in\u00a0System<\/strong>. Click it and wait for the \u2018Remote Desktop\u2019 page to load.\"Enable<\/p>\n

        Note<\/strong>: Ever since Remote Desktop Client 6.0, Remote Desktop Connections only work with Network Level Authentication. If you don\u2019t want to share admin credentials, go to the Remote Desktop Settings and click \u2018Select users that can remotely access this PC\u2019 and customize for yourself. There are options to get rid of this restriction too though.\"Select<\/p>\n

        2] Using Control Panel<\/h4>\n

        Another way to enable the Remote Desktop Connection<\/a>\u00a0is by using Control Panel. All you need to do is to open Run<\/strong> console (Win<\/strong> + R<\/strong>) > type Control<\/strong> > Enter<\/strong> > Control Panel<\/strong> > System and Security<\/strong> >System<\/strong> > Allow remote access<\/strong> > Remote<\/strong> tab > check the box next to Allow Remote Assistance connections to this\u00a0<\/strong>computer and<\/b>\u00a0Allow Remote Connections to this computer<\/strong> > Apply<\/strong> > OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        3] Using the Windows search bar<\/h4>\n

        Alternatively, you can navigate to the Windows search bar and type RDP<\/strong>. Under Best Match<\/strong>, click on Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong> to open the app. Next, you can enter the computer name or select one from the drop-down and press Connect. You would then need to enter the credentials after you connect, and you can use the Microsoft Remote Desktop utility.<\/p>\n

        5] Through the Command Prompt<\/h4>\n

        Besides, you can also enable Remote Desktop using Command Prompt or PowerShell<\/a>. All you need to do is launch the elevated Command Prompt, run mstsc.exe<\/strong>, and hit Enter<\/strong>. It will open the Remote Desktop Connection. Alternatively, you can open Windows PowerShell in admin mode, type in mstsc<\/strong>, and hit Enter<\/strong> to enable RDP.<\/p>\n

        6] Using the File Explorer<\/h4>\n

        Double-click on Remote Desktop Connection to open the app on Windows 11 and enable it.<\/p>\n

        Alternatively, click on the Start<\/strong> menu and click on All Apps<\/strong>. Next, scroll down and click on Windows Tools<\/strong>. Once this folder opens, click on Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong> to open the app.<\/p>\n

        8] Using the Task Manager<\/h4>\n

        To use Microsoft Remote Desktop, you can enable it through the Task Manager. For this, right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. Next, click on File and select Run new task. In the Create new task<\/strong> console, type in mstsc<\/strong> and hit Enter<\/strong> to open RDP.<\/p>\n

        9] By creating a desktop shortcut<\/h4>\n

        If you are looking for a quicker way to enable the Remote Desktop Connection or any other software, create a desktop shortcut for RDP<\/a>. For this, right-click on an empty area in the desktop > New<\/strong> > Shortcut<\/strong> > Create Shortcut<\/strong> window > type %windir%\\system32\\mstsc.exe<\/strong> > Next<\/strong> > name it Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong> > Finish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Now, double-click on the shortcut to open and use Microsoft Remote Desktop.<\/p>\n

        10] Using a hotkey<\/h4>\n

        Once you have successfully created the desktop shortcut for Remote Desktop connection<\/a>, you can then add the shortcut key. Here’s how:<\/p>\n

        Right-click on the Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong> shortcut and select Properties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Now, select the Shortcut<\/strong> tab, and click inside the Shortcut key field.<\/p>\n

        Now, hit the R<\/strong> key on your keyboard and it will create the hotkey (Ctrl<\/strong> + Alt<\/strong> + R<\/strong>) for Remote Desktop Connection. But make sure, you do not delete the desktop shortcut because it’s required for the hotkey to work.<\/p>\n

        11] By adding a shortcut to the context menu<\/h4>\n

        You can also add the shortcut to open the Remote Desktop Connection to the right-click context menu of the desktop. All you need to do is to edit the registry settings. However, before that, make sure you create a backup of the registry editor to restore any lost settings<\/a> later if needed.<\/p>\n

        Now, launch the Run<\/strong> console (Win<\/strong> + R<\/strong>), type regedit<\/strong> and hit Enter<\/strong> to open the Registry Editor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Next, navigate to the below path in the Registry Editor:<\/p>\n

        Computer\\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Directory\\Background\\shell\\<\/pre>\n
        Now, right-click on the Shell<\/strong> folder, select New<\/strong> > Key<\/strong> > Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
        Next, right-click on Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong> > New<\/strong> > Key<\/strong> > name the key as Command<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
        Now, go to the right, right-click on the Default<\/strong> string and select Modify<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
        In the Value data<\/strong> field, type C:\\Windows\\System32\\mstsc<\/strong> and press OK<\/strong> to save the changes.<\/p>\n

        Why can’t I connect to Remote Desktop on Windows 11?<\/h3>\n
        If you can’t connect to Remote Desktop Connection on Windows 11, it could be either due to the antivirus or Windows Firewall blocking the app. Or it could be possible that you do not have the permission to log in via RDP. In such cases, while you can restart both the devices to resolve the issue, you can also turn off the antivirus or the firewall temporarily.
