I often used to help people in forums, where they mentioned that their hard drive had crashed and that they had lost all their data just because they did not check the health of their hard drive – and nor did they have any backups<\/a>. Although Windows computer systems have a built-in disk error checking<\/a> scanner, which offers many command-line options<\/a>\u00a0to scan the hard drive for Errors and\u00a0Bad Sectors<\/a>, you can use a\u00a0 third-party free disk error-checking software to scan hard disks for errors. In this article, I\u2019ll talk about the following CHKDSK alternatives to repair and fix bad sectors on Hard Drive<\/a>:<\/p>\n

    1] Windows Surface Scanner<\/h4>\n

    Windows Surface Scanner will scan for bad sectors and generate a report for you. This program will not correct the bad sector, but it just finds them for you. Once you download it run the setup to install it. When you open the application, you\u2019ll get the end-users agreement. Accept it.<\/p>\n

    Once you open it, first you will have to mount your Hard drive, and then click on Scan<\/em>. You can download\u00a0the Windows Surface Scanner from here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    2] HD Tune<\/h4>\n

    HD Tune hard disk utility<\/a> is a hard disk utility, and a freeware tool for Windows OS, which uses a set of simple steps to check the status of hard drives (internal, external or extractable). Apart from checking the status, the application is measures the drive’s performance, errors during scanning, health status and much more.<\/p>\n

    3] Macrorit Disk Scanner<\/h4>\n

    Macrorit Disk Scanner<\/a> can also help you fix bad sectors. The program displays the complete statistics on the top panel which includes the device selected, the speed of the scan, number of errors found, scan area, elapsed time and estimated time remaining to complete the scan.<\/p>\n

    4] EaseUS Partition Master Free<\/h4>\n

    EaseUS Partition Master Free<\/a> includes a surface test that can scan for and fix bad sectors.<\/p>\n

    5] AbelsSoft CheckDrive<\/h4>\n

    AbelsSoft CheckDrive<\/a> offers you an easy way of checking your PC’s hard drives for errors and fixing them. Even Solid-state drives (SSD) are supported.<\/p>\n

    6] HDDScan<\/h4>\n

    HDDScan is a freeware utility for hard drive diagnostics (RAID arrays, Flash USB and SSD drives are also supported). The program can test storage devices for errors (Bad-blocks and bad sectors), show S.M.A.R.T. attributes and change some HDD parameters such as AAM, APM, etc.<\/p>\n

    Fix Hard Drive Bad Sectors<\/h2>\n

    OK, you found a Bad sector – so what next? Well, the first thing that you could do is start backing up your data because there is a good chance your hard drive might fail soon. If your hard is still under warranty then RMA it. If not then the next thing to do is to find a way to fix these bad sectors. There are a couple of programs out there that claim to repair bad sectors. Each Hard drive manufactures its own Hard drive diagnostic tools. Check their website and run a diagnostic just to be sure. I\u2019ll recommend a few programs which may be able to fix bad sectors.<\/p>\n

    1. HDD Bad Sectors Repair is a good program<\/a> to repair Maxtor hard drives.<\/li>\n
    2. Ultimate Boot CD has a couple of<\/a> Hard drive repair utilities.<\/li>\n
    3. Windows Surface Scanner discussed above from DTI Data is a Chkdsk alternative to fix Hard Drive Bad Sectors.<\/li>\n
    4. Seagate SeaTools<\/a> is a powerful\u00a0diagnostic application that helps you to quickly determine the condition of the disk drive and Hard Disk health\u00a0of an external hard drive and computer<\/li>\n
    5. Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows PC performs drive identification, diagnostics, and repairs on most Western Digital hard disk drives.<\/li>\n
    6. Hard Disk Validator<\/a> checks Hard Drive for bad sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      If nothing works, then, nowadays, hard drives are rather reasonably priced – do consider replacing them.<\/p>\n
