The\u00a0Icon Cache or <em>IconCache.db<\/em> is a special database\u00a0file that Windows utilizes to keep copies of each icon handy. When Windows needs to draw an icon, it uses the copy from the cache instead of retrieving the icon image from the original application file. This helps in making Windows draw the icons faster.<\/p>\n<h2>Rebuild The Icon Cache in Windows 7<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-259810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Rebuild-The-Icon-Cache.png\" alt=\"Rebuild The Icon Cache\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Rebuild-The-Icon-Cache.png 600w, https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Rebuild-The-Icon-Cache-500x357.png 500w, https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Rebuild-The-Icon-Cache-300x214.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Windows 8<\/strong>, <strong>Windows 7<\/strong> and <strong>Windows Vista<\/strong>, this IconCache.db file is located at:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Users\\Username\\AppData\\Local\\IconCache.db<\/pre>\n<p>Whereas, it is different in the older version of Windows i.e. Windows XP.<\/p>\n<p>If you find your Windows displaying icons on the desktop in the wrong manner you can purge &amp; rebuild the Icon Cache In Windows.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to rebuild the Icon cache, Open File Explorer &gt;\u00a0Folder Options &gt; Views to show Hidden System Files. Next, go to C:\\Users\\Username\\AppData\\Local folder and delete the hidden <strong>IconCache.db<\/strong> file. Reboot. This action will purge and rebuild the icon cache.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is also another way to do it, should the above method not work for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kill Explorer.exe process. In Windows 7, click Start button &gt; Hold down Ctrl+Shift &amp; Right Click on an empty area in the Start Menu &gt; Click &#8220;Exit Explorer&#8221;.
